Think of a time of a female novelist Georges Sand and Chopin were romantically involved. And he was a severe pulmonary so, health was not good.  He left to southern Spain to escape the cold winter in Paris, the Mediterranean island of Majorca with Sand. Sand, one day out of the hotel when the rain fell. Chopin was thinking of Sand suffered from the rain while listening to the rain that falls and made the song.
